Depression And Eating Disorders Among Adolescents
Depression and Eating Disorders in Adolescents There are a lot of resources to get food if it is needed by an adolescent such as the school lunch programs, but when they are depressed, eating is a new challenge and adolescent nutritional status is affected by their mental health and depression. Parents and peers are not always aware of what is going on to the adolescent and the depressed adolescent rate can decrease starting with them. When I was a senior in high school, I had fallen in a deep depression that caused me to starve myself. Being depressed took a turn for the worst when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism but I had all of the symptoms for hyperthyroidism. I had lost 20 pounds and continued to not eat simply because I was notâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Some people believe that depression is a joke or is an on or off switch when in reality, it is a disorder that can affect someone very negatively. Ferreiro, Seoane, and Senraââ¬â¢s study suggests that when an adolescent is being bullied because of a factor in thei r life that they cannot control, it causes them to shut off the world and can worsen their depression because they are now afraid to reach out due to the one negative outcome (2011). If adolescents are afraid to reach out, they might never overcome their depression and could seek out worse ways to deal with it. Lack of Support Students need to have a support system to help them through tough times in high school or at any stage in their life. When I had told my best friends that I was depressed, their answer to me was ââ¬Å"why, you have nothing to be depressed aboutâ⬠. I thought I was able to turn to them during this hard time in my life and they gave me no support. According to Rueger, Malecki, Aycock, and Coyle, social support has been shown to be an important factor in adolescent development while they are dealing with depression (2016). A strong social support for adolescents help build their self-esteem and well-being and having little to no support can cause an increase in depression. A lot of people do not know how to help others when they need it most and can cause more harm than good.
