The Impact Of Technological Revolution On North Carolina...
Globalization is not a new phenomenon. However, if the average person on the streets was asked about globalization, the overwhelming response would be connected to newer technologies such as the Internet, tablets, or cell phones. This response is due to the rapid expansion of the globalization concept occurring during the technological revolution. The technological revolution is credited for enhancing the U.S. and global economies. While this is true, the effects of the technological revolution varied around the U.S. This paper will focus on the technological revolution effects on North Carolinaââ¬â¢s economy. The technological revolution spanned many decades, but for the scope of this paper will be limited to the 1990s through the early 2000s. Prior to the 1990s, the U.S. technology market was dominated by foreign products. Conversely, several blue-collar industries, including the furniture industry, were thriving on U.S. made goods. The foreign technology market domina nce shifted in the 1990s. The creation of several U.S. technology and dot-com companies swayed the technology market to the U.S., but this shift did not benefit the blue-collar industries. The technology boom changed the course of globalization. In the 1990s, several dot-com companies such as Yahoo!, Google, and eBay were established, while other U.S. technology companies such as Apple, Oracle, and Netscape began to expand. The immediate results became apparent as the stock market skyrocketed.Show MoreRelatedUS Senate Case Study1693 Words à |à 7 PagesCalled to confront a massive technological debate in the United States in the modern day, the US Senate will discuss the possible impacts and effects of automation in the workforce and vote on a resolution. Pernicious Anemia free essay sample
Anemia is a disorder of the blood. It occurs when your body does not produce enough erythrocytes or red blood cells (RBCs). Without the erythrocytes oxygen can not be adequately delivered to the tissues and organs throughout the body. This will cause you to become weak and tired. A person may also experience headaches, skin pallor, and faintness. Your body may attempt to compensate for these symptoms by speeding up the heart rate and respiratory rate. This is the bodyââ¬â¢s attempt to return oxygen levels to normal(Thibodeau and Patton, 2005). There are several different types of anemia. Some of those are hemorrhagic, iron-deficiency, aplastic, and pernicious. Pernicious anemia is a type of anemia due to a vitamin B-12 deficiency and lack of intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is an protein found only in the stomach and is responsible for the absorption of B-12. The stomach may not produce intrinsic factor due to stomach surgery, such as gastric bypass, parasites or an overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines, Crohnââ¬â¢s or Celiac disease. The lack of intrinsic factor is also an autoimmune disease for some people(Pernicious Anemia, n. d. Pernicious anemia is more common among those who are Scandinavian or Celtic, and in the elderly. This type of anemia was referred to as pernicious because of the deadly outcome it had at one time. Doctors knew that patients were anemic but common cures for anemia did not work. This was until the 1920ââ¬â¢s when two physicians, George Minot and William Murphy, joined together and realized that certain foods restored patient health and red blood cells drastically. The best type of food for pernicious anemia was liver. The doctors didnââ¬â¢t understand why but seen great improvements in a very short time period (Jacovino, 1998). Another physician, William Castle, also helped to cure the disease. In one experiment he ate liver, made himself vomit, and fed it to his patients. Oddly enough this strange idea worked. His unusual method led to the discovery of intrinsic factor. A protein found only in the stomach. Later on it was revealed that the intrinsic factor allowed absorption of vitamin B-12. B-12 is abundant in liver and is what made the liver therapy a success (Jacovino, 1998). The lack of intrinsic factor in the stomach leads to a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Vitamin B-12 is necessary for production of normal, healthy red blood cells. Without B-12, red blood cells become to large(macrocytic) and do not carry enough oxygen to supply the body. Without enough oxygen the body can not function normally and a person is said to be anemic (Pernicious Anemia, n. d. ). There are many different signs and symptoms of pernicious anemia. As mentioned before, the classic sign is the feeling of being tired and weak at all times. Other signs and symptoms can include having a bright red, smooth tongue, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, shortness of breath (Mary J. Shomon, n. d. ) There is also changes in a persons nervous system. Such changes are seen in the patients vision, taste, and smell. The patient may also have an unsteady gait, become depressed, confused, have a loss of memory and develop psychosis. Problems can even occur in the digestive system. This would include bleeding gums, mouth sores, nausea and vomiting. Gas, heartburn, change in bowel movements (constipation or diarrhea), and weight change are some other symptoms. Evan hepatomegaly can be part of the disease process. Left untreated pernicious anemia can lead to heart failure/heart attacks and strokes. The disease also puts a person at risk for stomach cancer(Pernicious Anemia, n. d. ) Prevention is possible if your anemia is due to poor dietary habits. A vegetarian or someone who has gastric bypass can improve their symptoms by eating a foods rich in vitamin B-12. Foods to include in your diet would be: *meat(especially liver), poultry, and shellfish *orange juice and milk *leafy green vegetables *rice, barley, and cereal *legumes A person can also increase vitamin B-12 intake with supplements. There are several to choose from. Vitamin B-12 can be found in daily vitamins or by themselves(Pernicious Anemia, n. d. ) There is different test that will be ordered by your physician to diagnos the condition. A complete blood count is one of those. This will determine your hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. A complete blood count will also show the amount and size of the erythrocytes. Other blood test will include test that check B-12 and folic acid deficiencies, elevated levels of homocysteine, and a decreased potassium and cholesteral level. The physician will also be looking for antibodies to intrinsic factor that will be present in the body. The reticulocytes, which are immature red blood cells, will be counted. They will be low in pernicious anemia. Another procedure, bone marrow aspiration, might be performed to see if the bone marrow is producing sufficient red blood cells, and to make sure the RBCs are healthy(Pernicious Anemia, n. d. ) You may also have to have two urine test. One test will measure the amount of methymalonic acid. Methymalonic acid is high in pernicious anemia. The other urine test is called a Schilling test. The Schilling test will determine if the body is absorbing vitamin B-12 normally. To perform this test you must first take an oral dose of B-12 that has radioactive markers, then hours later receive an injection of B-12 without the radioactive markers. Urine samples will be collected for the next 24 hours. If results are abnormal, there are three more stages of the Schilling test that you have to complete to determine the reason why you can not absorb B-12(Schilling Test, n. d. Once diagnosed by a physicain and it is determined that you have pernicious anemia, there is treatment available. The two most common options are vitamin supplements and injections. B-12 also comes in a gel and nasal spray form. Europeans have been researching a nasal spray form of hydryocobalamin and this research is showing promising results(Shomon, n. d. ). After initial testing and treatment you will be required to see your doctor on a regular basis. Routine visits will make sure that treatment is working, B-12 levels are normal in the body, and to monitor effects caused by anemia. Check to see if nerve damage is getting better/worse, and watching for stomach cancer. ) Pernicious anemia is a devasting condition that will cause damage to all parts of the body, may lead to cancer, and eventually cause death if left untreated. But is easily diagnosed through blood and urine testing. It is easily treated with a diet high in vitamin B-12 and supplemental B-12. The symptoms usually start to improve within days and diminish over time. Some problems do have a life long effect, but most are treatable and reversible with proper treatment.

Life on Earth During the Precambrian Time Span
Life on Earth During the Precambrian Time Span The Precambrian Time Span is the earliest time period on the Geologic Time Scale. It stretches from the formation of the earth 4.6 billion years ago to around 600 million years ago and encompasses many Eons and Eras leading up to the Cambrian Period in the current Eon. Beginning of Earth The earth was formed about 4.6 billion years ago in a violent explosion of energy and dust according to the rock record from Earth and other planets. For about a billion years, the earth was a barren place of volcanic action and a less than suitable atmosphere for most types of life. It wasnt until about 3.5 billion years ago that it is thought that the first signs of life formed. The Beginning of Life on Earth The exact way life began on Earth during the Precambrian Time is still debated in the scientific community. Some theories that have been posed over the years include the Panspermia Theory, Hydrothermal Vent Theory, and Primordial Soup. It is known, however, there was not much diversity in organism type or complexity during this extremely long period of Earths existence. Most of the life that existed during the Precambrian Time span were prokaryotic single-celled organisms. There is actually a pretty rich history of bacteria and related unicellular organisms within the fossil record. In fact, it is now thought that the first types of unicellular organisms were extremophiles in the Archaean domain. The oldest trace of these that have been found so far is around 3.5 billion years old. These earliest forms of life resembled cyanobacteria. They were photosynthetic blue-green algae that thrived in the extremely hot, carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere. These trace fossils were found on the Western Australia coast. Other, similar fossils have been found all over the world. Their ages span about two billion years. With so many photosynthetic organisms populating the earth, it was only a matter of time before the atmosphere started to accumulate higher levels of oxygen since oxygen gas is a waste product of photosynthesis. Once the atmosphere had more oxygen, many new species evolved that could use oxygen to create energy. More Complexity Appears The first traces of eukaryotic cells showed up about 2.1 billion years ago according to the fossil record. These seem to be single-celled eukaryotic organisms that lacked the complexity we see in most of todays eukaryotes. It took about another billion years before the more complex eukaryotes evolved, probably through endosymbiosis of prokaryotic organisms. The more complex eukaryotic organisms began living in colonies and creating stromatolites. From these colonial structures most likely came multicellular eukaryotic organisms. The first sexually reproducing organism evolved around 1.2 billion years ago. Evolution Speeds Up Towards the end of the Precambrian Time period, much more diversity evolved. The earth was undergoing somewhat rapid climate changes, going from completely frozen over to mild to tropical and back to freezing. The species that were able to adapt to these wild fluctuations in climate survived and flourished. The first protozoa appeared followed closely by worms. Soon after, arthropods, mollusks, and fungi showed up in the fossil record. The end of the Precambrian Time saw much more complex organisms like jellyfish, sponges, and organisms with shells come into existence. The end of the Precambrian Time period came at the beginning of the Cambrian Period of the Phanerozoic Eon and Paleozoic Era. This time of great biological diversity and rapid increase in organism complexity is known as the Cambrian Explosion. The end of the Precambrian Time marked the start of the more quickly progressing evolution of species over Geologic Time.

How to Decide If You Should Quit Your Job A Step-by-Step Guide
How to Decide If You Should Quit Your Job A Step-by-Step Guide Youââ¬â¢ve had it, youââ¬â¢ve really had it this time. The de-stressing techniques you learned in your yoga class are no longer working, and the thought of getting up in the morning and going in to work gives you anxiety hives, the likes of which you havenââ¬â¢t seen since tenth grade geometry exams. But is this it? Is it time to cut bait on this job and start scrambling for something else? And if so, how does one do that without regretting an impulsive choice? There are a lot of different factors to consider. Like:If I do decide to quit, should I do it before I have a job offer? If I donââ¬â¢t have a job offer waiting in the wings, can I justify leaving my job in an uncertain economy? Is this really quit-worthy, or am I just reacting to a temporary situation?Am I prepared for a long job hunt? What can I do in the meantime?Thatââ¬â¢s a lot of stuff to have swirling around in your head while you try to make a major life decision. Letââ¬â¢s break it down a little more.Sh ould I Quit?Quitting your job is not a decision to make lightly. A new job right away isnââ¬â¢t a given, but thereââ¬â¢s also your longer career to think about: if you sacrifice your position now, will that set you back in the long term? Or will it increase the likelihood that youââ¬â¢ll find the next great opportunity by giving yourself this push? The first step in making this decision is always, always to do a self-assessment. Thinking, ââ¬Å"I should quit,â⬠and then handing in your resignation that day, is more likely to lead to panic and regret sooner than later. So if youââ¬â¢re angry, wait until that red rage subsides a little bit, and ask yourself, ââ¬Å"why am I so unhappy here?â⬠According to some experts, the best place to start is a simple pro/con list:What do I like about this job? What do I dislike about this job?Whatââ¬â¢s missing from this job? What would I want from this job that Iââ¬â¢m not getting? After youââ¬â¢ve got your basic rundo wn of whatââ¬â¢s bugging you about your job, the next step is to figure out if any of the ââ¬Å"consâ⬠are fixable. Would reprioritizing your duties help? Would your boss be receptive to changing things to be more amenable to your needs, or talking about a raise? If you donââ¬â¢t see those cons as budging anytime soon, then itââ¬â¢s likely time to move on. Also, if the ââ¬Å"conâ⬠list is much longer than the ââ¬Å"proâ⬠side, thatââ¬â¢s a clue that the problems may not be fixable enough.RELATED:à 10 Signs Itââ¬â¢s Time to Quit Your JobAnother factor to consider is whether itââ¬â¢s really the job making you unhappy. If the ââ¬Å"proâ⬠list is substantial and the ââ¬Å"consâ⬠donââ¬â¢t seem so bad once youââ¬â¢ve written them out, it might be that youââ¬â¢re unhappy in other aspects of your life, and itââ¬â¢s bleeding into your work life. If itââ¬â¢s just the job thatââ¬â¢s causing stress and tension, then you may wa nt to move forward with quitting. If you think itââ¬â¢s your relationships or financial issues or anything else in your life thatââ¬â¢s exacerbating standard work stress, then try addressing those factors first. You may find that youââ¬â¢re not as unhappy at work once other issues are resolved (or at least worked on).Once you have your self-assessment complete, and have a stronger sense of whatââ¬â¢s causing your work malaise, itââ¬â¢s time to do the next level of research: talking about it to someone at work.I Want to Try to Make It Work. How Do I Make Things Better?Schedule some time with your boss where you can sit down alone and talk about your unhappiness. If your compensation is the problem, be prepared to ask for a raise. If itââ¬â¢s your workload, ask about how you can reprioritize your duties. If itââ¬â¢s a conflict with other employees, you can get feedback about how to deal with it, officially or unofficially. Either way, be prepared for a frank discu ssion with your supervisor. And itââ¬â¢s important to keep the tone as neutral as you can- you donââ¬â¢t want your concerns to be dismissed as a rant, or have anyone question your professionalism. If youââ¬â¢re concerned that you will chicken out or will get very angry, practice your talking points ahead of time, either by yourself or with a trusted non-work person. If your boss is the problem, the politics get a little more difficult. You can speak with HR or your bossââ¬â¢s boss if youââ¬â¢re concerned about direct confrontation, but understand that the information could get back to your boss, and make things extra uncomfortable. If things are that bumpy and contentious with your own boss, it may be time to leave. You can also try some remedies on your own, without involving your manager or HR. Sometimes trying harder to approach your job with a positive and more receptive attitude can help ease things a bit, at least in the short term. Personally, I know that when Ià ¢â¬â¢m already grumpy, things just kind of spiral down from there- but when I make a conscious effort to say, ââ¬Å"Okay, maybe Iââ¬â¢m overreacting and need to try this from a different direction,â⬠things seem less dire. Bottom line: you know yourself and your professional goals better than anyone, so only you can decide whether these short-term fixes will hold, or whether things will backslide in a matter of weeks.I Think I Need to Quit.Issues that are unlikely to resolve themselves include:You lack passion for your job, with no exciting prospects on the immediate horizon. You have skills and experience that are going to waste.Your compensation is way under what other people in similar positions make, and your company wonââ¬â¢t be able to close that gap any time soon. The company itself is failing, and everyoneââ¬â¢s starting to get a TitanicYouââ¬â¢re being verbally abused or sexually harassed at work. You have no work-life balance, or itââ¬â¢s getting steadi ly worse.Your boredom or malaise has led to decreased performance.Your work stress is making you physically ill.Youââ¬â¢re no longer learning anything new at your job.If any of these are your issue, and thereââ¬â¢s no immediate solution that you can see, itââ¬â¢s time to move forward with an exit plan.Okay, I Do Want to Quit. Now What?Donââ¬â¢t draft your resignation just yet. Give your decision some time to marinate. That can help you work out any last ââ¬Å"is it me or the job?â⬠kinks, and decide definitively that youââ¬â¢re ready to let go. At this stage, you also have to think about what quitting means.Do you have another job offer lined up?And if so, does it address the issues you have with your current job?If you donââ¬â¢t have another offer yet, are you prepared to be adrift in the job market for a while?Itââ¬â¢s best to have an offer in hand before you quit, but thatââ¬â¢s not always going to be possible. If youââ¬â¢re quitting because of on e of the dealbreakers mentioned above (especially being stuck with verbal or sexual harassment), you may decide that you just canââ¬â¢t continue on in your current job for the average six months it could take to find a new job. To study the feasibility and profitability of establishing an Essay
To study the feasibility and profitability of establishing an international school in Mainland China - Essay Example Reed (l988) in her study of Education in the People's Republic of China and U.S underscored the importance of having international schools in China to cater for educational requirements of children of expatriate parents working in the country. Similarly, Fuldien (as cited in Hammond, 2007) demonstrated how the presence of English Schools Foundation (ESF) in Hong Kong has contributed to the education sector by providing high quality and cost-effective education through the use of English as the medium of instruction. This chapter presents review of the literature of studies done on the feasibility and profitability of establishing an international school in the emerging cities in Mainland China. The chapter is divided into various headings for easier presentation of the literature review. The Chinese education system is lauded as one having the longest history in the world. Available documented evidence indicates that the Chinese practice of education developed from the imperial civil examination system introduced in the early 7th century (as cited in Feagles, 1999). This type of examination system was devised exclusively as a mechanism for choosing and enlisting aspirants for the official system of government of the time and was found to identify only worthiness, competition and valor. Paver and Wang (1992) explain that this instrument was considered a powerful tool built upon social ambitions rather than individual concerns and therefore made examinations the only gauge for future success and achievement. This system has been found to strongly influence the education systems of Chinese communities to date, while still emphasizing the educational values highly esteemed by both parents and students (Paver and Wang, 1992). Reed (l988) in her study reported that the Chinese education system is found to be a mixture of two cultures namely the Chinese culture and the British culture. She maintains that the British culture is responsible for the establishment of elite schools. These elite schools are accordingly sponsored and managed by the major religious bodies such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Church of Christ in China and the Methodist Church (all cited in Reed, l988). Moreover, the regal social examination system laid down in the 7th century has inculcated certain values in the Chinese people which are seen to strongly influence the nature almost all the local schools and the elite schools in Hong Kong. Available studies further argue that this culture inculcated by the system have been responsible to produce all round students and graduates in the world (Kennedy, l977). The consequence of this argument is demonstrated in global comparisons of student achievements. Aanenson ( 1979) illustrates that Chinese students mainly from Hong Kong are always positioned amongst the top. Apart from fostering the spirit of hard-work and competitiveness, the Chinese tradition also underscores the importance of moral education which very much differs from the concept of morality as perceived in the Western countries (Reed, l988). The concept of moral education as recognized by the Chinese puts into account virtually all characteristics of education including but not exhaustively ethics,
